IT'S RAINING: A woman shelters herself and her child under an umbrella during brief rainfall yesterday in Port-of-Spain. ...

BRIEF showers in parts of North Trinidad yesterday brought a brief respite from months of blistering heat but the Meteorological Office explained that hot and dry conditions, which have been the hallmarks of this harsh dry season, are expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Several pedestrians in Port-of-Spain yesterday opened their umbrellas not to shelter from the sun but instead, from the rain.

Parked cars got a good washing for a few minutes which no doubt would have brought smiles to the faces owners since washing with hoses is banned due to the harsh dry season.

Senior meteorologist Shakeer Baig said it rained mostly along the Northen Range in the areas of Arima and Tunapuna.

“What we saw this morning (yesterday), as there was no rainfall at Piarco, were very isolated showers which we attribute to a bit of moisture associated with a low level trough,” Baig said.

He added that these showers are very insignificant in terms of producing any measurable amount of rain.

The country is currently experiencing a meteorological drought joining several countries with similar or worse conditions in the region.
