The Emancipation Support Committee expresses its deepest sorrow on the passing of a brother and patriot, Professor Dennis Pantin and publicly extends its condolences to his family. Professor Pantin was one of those intellectuals who consistently demonstrated a deep commitment and willingness to take knowledge and dialogue beyond the walls of the University to all peoples in the society, the ESC said in a statement.

He will be remembered as an activist scholar who was always willing to bring fresh and unconventional thinking to the development challenges facing Trinidad and Tobago and the region.

“We will remember Dennis always for his outstanding contribution to the Kwame Ture Memorial Lecture Series. Whenever he spoke he delivered well thought out and well received lectures, on topics of critical importance. In his last lecture for the Emancipation Support Committee in 2008 he was warning of the need to include considerations of the environment in economic planning to avoid the looming disasters of climate change,” the committee said.

Professor Pantin’s presence will also be missed in other aspects of the Emancipation celebration, as he was a stout aficionado of the annual pan night, and would be ever present at the numerous calypso programmes hosted over the years, said the ESC.

Pantin’s funeral is expected to take place tomorrow.
