Rubbish on the road

Wednesday, July 28 2010

PART of the roadside along the Penal Rock Road in Moruga is quickly becoming a “popular” dump site and angry residents are calling on the authority to intervene and stop persons from disposing their garbage there.

For several years, residents have been complaining about the problem which poses a major health concern for residents living along the ten-mile mark. One resident, who asked not to be named, also blamed some fellow residents for contributing to the problem.

“People dump chicken guts, among other things, right at the roadside causing flies galore. Any rubbish you could think about is right here. The place is just like a landfill. I am not saying that people here do not dump rubbish too but the bulk of rubbish comes from outsiders,” she said.

The Penal Rock Road, spans from Basse Terre Village, Moruga, to Penal Junction, Penal. This road also connects to Barrackpore and Morne Diablo.

The frustrated woman further explained that although the road conditions are terrible for motorists, there are frequent users. She blamed the “outsiders” for transporting their garbage from all parts of the southland and dumping them at the roadside.

“The rubbish spot is at the start of the teak field before Santa Maria Village so the houses are a little off. It is nastiness to throw garbage at the roadside. The whole place is stink and when motorist past there, they have to wind-up their vehicle windscreens,” she explained.

Call to the Princes Town Regional Corporation proved futile as calls went unanswered yesterday.
