THE legal fraternity is growing as yesterday afternoon, 47 new attorneys were officially called to the bar at the Hall of Justice, Port-of-Spain. The general admission to practice in local courts took place at the Convocation Hall at Hall of Justice, in a touching ceremony which was presided over by Chief Justice Ivor Archie Justice Maureen Rajnauth-Lee and Justice Vasheist Kokaram.

After the attorneys took their oaths, the Chief Justice briefly congratulated the group, noting that this was a milestone in their lives, and that they should look forward to whatever the future brings. However, Archie did say that he believed that despite the hard work of the new attorneys to reach this state, the ability to practice law was a privilege and not a right, and that “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

In delivering the feature address Justice Kokaram encouraged the young attorneys to be ever vigilant as law was a continuously evolving and changing thing.

The High Court Judge also called on the lawyers to adhere to the ethical roles and values of their legal profession, and to always be honest and respectful towards their colleagues.

A wide range of attorneys turned up to “petition” those being called including Senior Counsels Dana Seetahal and Theodore Guerra.
