IRO head outraged over desecration

Wednesday, April 4 2012

HEAD of the Inter Religious Organisation (IRO) Emrol Gould yesterday expressed his outrage over the desecration of two Hindu prayer rooms in Princes Town over the weekend.

“The executive of the IRO has not discussed the matter as yet but I am sure they are as outraged as I am over what has happened in the name of religion. This is a multi religious, multi cultural society and while I don’t have the facts, it shows a level of intolerance,” Gould said.

Sister Sharon Mohammed, religious leader of the recently formed Full Gospel Church, the “Joy Tabernacle” of Hope Road, Second Branch in Princes Town is accused of destroying several Hindu murtis belonging to villagers’ Gayapersad Hajaree, 87, and Parbatee Ramoo, 54, sometime during the early hours of last Saturday morning.

Hajaree of Hope Road, First Branch, Princes Town and Ramoo of Hope Road, Princes Town both awoke on Saturday morning to find their prayer rooms located outside their homes ransacked and murtis smashed and strewn in the yard, road and drain.

Ramoo is preparing for a pooja (prayers) on Friday. The matter has been reported to the Princes Town Police Station but no one has as yet been arrested.

In light of what has happened, Gould told Newsday he will visit the affected families today to lend his support and solidarity. Investigations are continuing.
