Supporting Daddy: Nadia Ramjattan hugs her father Basdeo Persad at the family home in Barrackpore yesterday. Persad's wife Rose died when a car crashe...

Rose Celestine Persad died of internal bleeding, collapsed lungs and kidneys, a broken spine and two broken legs, when a car crashed into her as she stood in the yard of her home, last Sunday.

Persad, of Ramsabad Trace, Rochard Road, Barrackpore was in the yard when a red Nissan Almera car veered off the road and slammed into her.

Persad, who would have celebrated her 28th wedding anniversary that day, was pronounced dead on arrival at the San Fernando General Hospital.

When Newsday visited the home yesterday, her grieving husband, Basdeo, admitted that one of the most difficult aspects of his wife’s death was telling their four children who live abroad.

“When all the kids reach home, I don’t know what will happen then,” the distraught man said.

One of his daughters, Nadia Ramjattan, who had arrived yesterday, said the family was having a difficult time dealing with her mother’s death.

“We are not good but I am just trying to be here for my father,” she said, adding “my mother was the closest to me.”

She said one of her relatives broke the news of her mother’s death to her as her father could not bring himself to tell her.

Her other siblings are expected to arrive today in preparation for the funeral which is expected to begin at 9.30 am tomorrow at their Barrackpore home.
