SERIOUSLY HURT: Harricrete CEO Victor Sooknarine...
CHIEF Executive Officer (CEO) of Harricrete Ltd, Victor Sooknarine is reportedly warded in serious condition at St Clair Medical Centre following an accident during the early morning hours yesterday in which a foreign national was reportedly killed.
According to police sources, at about 4 am, Sooknarine was reportedly driving his blue Mercedes Benz luxury sedan west along the Western Main Road in Cocorite having left the 51 Degrees nightclub. In the car, police reported were, Yanis Armstrong a citizen of the Czech Republic who was also known as Jenna and who was the front passenger; Abdullah Sandy, 27, and Craig Snell.
On reaching the vicinity of the Penta Paints building, the car swerved off the road and struck a nearby lamp post. The car spun and hit a concrete median which separates the roadway, before coming to a stop on the eastbound side of the main road.
Motorists who saw the accident contacted the authorities and within minutes, Western Division police officers arrived on the scene along with firemen. Officers pulled the occupants out of the mangled wreckage and rushed them to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital (PoSGH), where police said, Armstrong later died while undergoing treatment.
Up to late yesterday, police sources confirmed that Armstrong was a citizen of the Czech Republic and worked at a local advertising agency. Sandy was said to be a former St Anthony’s football player and a close friend of former National football striker Carlos Edwards. Sandy suffered a broken hip and leg from the accident while Snell reportedly suffered a fractured spine, a broken pelvis and head injuries.
Sooknarine reportedly suffered broken legs and severe chest and head injuries. Police sources revealed Sooknarine was later transferred from (PoSGH) to the St Clair Medical Centre, Fitzblackman Drive, where up to press time, his condition was said to be serious.
Sgt Hospedales of the St James Police Station is continuing investigations.
Sooknarine is the son of deceased businessman Harry Sooknarine who was the founder and governing director of Cariflex Limited and Harricrete Limited, who passed away at Medical Associates, St Joseph in May 2010, at the age of 77.
Sooknarine (Harry) was a prominent entrepreneur who in spite of being physically challenged was recognised in 1997 with the Hummingbird Medal Gold for loyal and devoted service to Trinidad and Tobago in the field of business.
