South schools excel at CSEC

Saturday, August 18 2012

Principals, staff and students at three secondary schools in South Trinidad were yesterday expressing joy at the recently released Caribbean Secondary Examinations Council (CSEC) results.

At St Benedict’s College in La Romaine, principal Earl Alcide was reporting 71 percent full passes among his students in the examinations. Successful students were also busy registering to sign up for CAPE. The principal also had double reason to celebrate as one of his students Daniel Guerrero obtained ten ones in the recent CAPE examinations. To explain how a student can obtain ten ones at CAPE, he explained that students are graded at Year One and Year Two in Sixth Form, and both grades are compiled at the end of the two years.

Over at Naparima Girls High School, principal Mrs Carolyn Gosine, reported a 98 percent full pass among her girls, with 50 percent or more getting seven subjects and more with distinctions. Two of her students, Kervelle Baird and Sushma Karim, both got ten subjects each with ten distinctions. But she said quite a number of students got nine subjects with nine distinctions as well as eight subjects with eight distinctions. At the CAPE examinations, Mrs Gosine reported a one hundred percent pass, with one student Sitara Persad getting ten distinctions as well.

At Presentation College in San Fernando, principal Errol Jaikaransingh said he had a 95 percent pass rate at CSEC.

He said students performed well in most subject areas, and improved in others. He said this year’s success rate was consistent with last year’s, with a number of students getting nine subjects with distinctions, and quite a number of them also got eight subjects with distinctions as well. He reminded that Presentation College, San Fernando was the only school in the country to win two Caribbean CAPE awards in 2010 and 2011. Scholarship results are expected to be announced in September.
