RESIDENTS of areas in western Trinidad, devastated by flooding two weekends ago, have expressed concerns of respiratory illnesses, due to the dust left behind from the dried mud.

However, Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan told Newsday he was not aware of his ministry receiving any complaints about the dust. He said because of the rainy season, the dust becomes a non-issue and was “not much of a problem.”

Khan said Public Health Inspectors were “on the ground” and had been there since the floods.

Asked about the possibility of an increase of dengue cases, he said, “The situation is being handled at all levels. They (public health inspectors) are on the ball.”

He said once any complaint was made, health inspectors would visit the site.

Khan has, however, advised persons to continue to take necessary precautions, such as empting or covering containers which could collect water.
