FORMER Opposition United National Congress (UNC) Senator Mohammed Faisal Rahman has died. His passing was announced in a brief statement issued by the office of the Prime Minister yesterday evening.

In the statement, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar extended condolences to the Rahman family on behalf of Government and the nation. Rahman was appointed a senator in the Ninth Parliament. He first entered Parliament on December 17, 2007 and debated bills including the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) (No 2) Bill, 2010, the Caribbean Court of Justice Headquarters Bill, 2008, the Children’s Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2008, the Family Court Bill, 2009 and the Integrity in Public Life (Amendment) Bill, 2009 among many others.

He also participated in more than 60 debates. Rahman once wrote that it was “an honour and a privilege to have served in the Senate. Speaking last night to Newsday, Government Chief Whip Dr Roodal Moonilal said he was sad to learn of Rahman’s death.

He described Rahman as a “vibrant letter writer” and social commentator who was very passionate on current affairs, particularly politics. The funeral is expected to take place today at the El Socorro Mosque in San Juan at 12.30 pm.
