Pregnant woman mauled by dangerous dogs gives birth

By CECILY ASSON Monday, September 24 2012

Kurleen Cooper, 36, who was five months pregnant when she was viciously mauled in May by three dangerous dogs near her Point Fortin home , gave birth to a bouncing baby boy on Saturday.

Both mother and the unnamed baby boy are healthy, Cooper’s son Kurlon, told Newsday yesterday. It is the Cooper’s fourth child and according to Kurlon, his mother was expected to be discharged from the San Fernando General Hospital yesterday.

Cooper gave birth to the boy on Saturday night and according to Kurlon, both mother and child were resting comfortably.

Cooper was admitted to hospital last Thursday following her regular visit to clinic at the Point Fortin District Hospital. She spoke to Newsday on Thursday, saying that the baby was already two weeks overdue.

Following the attack by the dogs on May 15, doctors expressed concerns over the health of the unborn child and during treatment for the wounds, she was taken off certain medication for fear that the foetus might have been harmed. On May 15, Cooper was returning to her South Central Road, Point Fortin home after dropping off her two other children — Jahmiah Richardson, seven, and Jesse, six, at the nearby Salazr Trace, Government Primary School. Three dogs pounced on her, throwing the pregnant mother into a drain at the side of the road. She was severely bitten by the animals from her head, right down to her legs. Cooper was rescued by passers-by. She underwent surgery at the San Fernando General Hospital for the wounds — her right arm was almost severed in the attack.

No one has been charged in connection with the incident.
