Nina Maingot...
The day after the murder of 61-year-old Nina Maingot, residents of Belmont were still trying to come to terms with her killing.
Maingot, who lived at the corner of Archer Street and Jermingham Avenue, was found dead by relatives at her home shortly after 11 am on Thursday. Her throat had been slit.
When Newsday returned to the house yesterday, relatives were still in disbelief.
“I still can’t believe this happened here. We had a wake last night and the entire road was just candles and people as everyone came out to pay their respects. That response showed the type of person she was. She was very loving and caring, and she was loved and cared for in return. We still can’t believe somebody would do this to her. That was just wickedness,” said a relative, who did not want to be identified.
On the roadway, persons who passed near the house told Newsday the ordeal has left them in a state of shock.
“If a man come to rob her, then why didn’t he just rob her? She couldn’t have harmed him, so why did he feel the need to harm her? That man was just evil. She used to always say hi to everybody on a morning when she was home and in her gallery. She was always a friendly and polite person, and she will be missed,” said a woman, who only gave her first name, Sandra.
Maingot was the 16th person over 60 to be killed for the year according to statistics kept by Newsday.
