Former Prime Minister Patrick Manning and MP for San Fernando East yesterday attended a Thanksgiving Service in his honour at the constituency office at Coffee Street, San Fernando.

The function was organised by San Fernando East Women’s League, who said they wanted “to give thanks for his progress” over the last year. The media was not allowed to cover the event.

“The women’s arm of the San Fernando East Constituency, we are the hosts, we are keeping a thanksgiving because it is one year since he got the stroke and he has really recuperated nicely and so we have decided to give thanks today. We are just happy where he has reached,” Education Officer of the Women’s League Carlene Granger said.

She said last week Wednesday marked one year since Manning suffered a stroke. Manning has not been able to attend Parliament since.

Dressed in a long sleeve white shirt and black pants, a smiling Manning arrived in the company of his wife former Education Minister Hazel Manning. He walked unaided into the building and was greeted by his security. He acknowledged the presence of the media with a smile but did not speak.

On January 23 last year, Manning suffered a mild stroke on his right side and had to be hospitalised. He later went abroad for treatment. He was recently granted further extended sick leave from Parliament.
