CLEARING OUT: Anthony Carmona yesterday clears out his office at the Hall of Justice in Port-of-Spain, having swapped the post of judge for that of Pr...

PRESIDENT-ELECT Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona, 59, yesterday cleared out his desk and said his goodbyes to staff at the Hall of Justice in Port-of-Spain. Carmona, who sat as a Puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago for nine years, was the sole nominee to be this country’s fifth President.

His confirmation to the highest post in the land took place by way of an announcement by Speaker Wade Mark before the Electoral College at the Parliament Chamber yesterday.

Two hours before Mark declared Carmona as President of the Republic, he was at the Hall of Justice, clearing out his Chambers.

He is expected to take the oath of office which will be administered by Chief Justice Ivor Archie at an inauguration ceremony on March 18, one day after President George Maxwell Richards, 82, demits office.

Newsday understands a formal farewell is being planned for next week by the Judiciary for the President-elect, while his fellow colleagues on the bench held their own private function for him at one of the common rooms at the Hall of Justice, last week.
