Deputy CoP: Gordon gun file for DPP soon

By Jada Loutoo Thursday, February 21 2013

DEPUTY Police Commissioner Mervyn Richardson says Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard, SC, will “very shortly” receive the police file on investigations of allegations that chairman of the Integrity Commission Ken Gordon failed to secure his licensed .380 pistol, which was loaded with five rounds of ammunition, on Carnival Monday.

Speaking with Newsday yesterday, Richardson confirmed that the file, complied by officers of the Organised Crime, Narcotics and Firearms Bureau (OCNFB), was handed over to him to submit to the DPP for instructions. He would not commit to a date, only that it will be submitted “in the shortest possible time.”

“All I would like to say is that the DPP will have the file very shortly.” He also would not say if the police’s investigations were completed.

Yesterday, Gaspard said he had not yet received the file.

According to reports, at about 5 pm on Carnival Monday, Gordon of Newbury Hill, Glencoe, parked his car near the Brian Lara Cancer Treatment Centre at Fitzblackman Drive, Port-of-Spain, and left to view Carnival activities. Gordon told officers the firearm was in his possession when he left his vehicle. Gordon, police said, later told them when he returned sometime later, he discovered the gun was missing.

Gordon carried out a frantic search for the gun in and around his car, but when the weapon could not be found he made a report to officers nearby. Police officers then advised Gordon to lodge a formal report with the St James police, which he did.

Gordon, 82, was subsequently contacted and informed that his missing gun was found at the side of the road near the Brian Lara Cancer Foundation by a schoolboy.
