I feel alive!

“I feel alive now.” This is what 94-year-old Carlton Daniel said after he received a birth certificate he had waited on for the past two years.
Daniel of Embacadare, San Fernando, received his computerised birth certificate on Thursday two days after his story was published in Tuesday’s Newsday.
“When a man don’t have a birth certificate it is like he is not alive. Without a birth certificate there is no proof to your existence,” Daniel told Newsday at his home yesterday. Daniel, whose right leg was amputated 12 years ago due to an infection, said he was grateful.
“As long as I’ve got this paper (birth certificate) right here, this is my proof that I am living. I feel so happy now,” he smiled. Daniel said he hopes to make it to 100 years.
Following the death of his wife Geraldine Charles Daniel in 2011, Daniel has been staying with his son, Carl and daughter-in-law Hazel Ann and grandchildren who all take care of him. Hazel Ann visited Newsday’s office in San Fernando on Tuesday seeking help for her father-in-law.
“I had been up and down from births/death office in Port-of-Spain to San Fernando for two years and more and all I was told was to come back or that Daniel’s name was not on the system. It was just a runaround,” Hazel Ann said.
She explained because Daniel did not have a birth certificate he was unable to access survivor’s benefits which he is entitled to from the National Insurance Board (NIB). After Hazel Ann’s appeal, Newsday contacted officials at the Ministry of Legal Affairs in Port-of-Spain and was advised that Hazel Ann should visit the office and speak to acting Deputy Registrar, Erica Cummings. The visit was made on Wednesday. In the absence of Cummings, that day, Hazel Ann said she spoke to Francis Sandy who was very helpful.
“He (Sandy) took the necessary information, a process was done and the evening of that same day I got a phone call that the birth certificate was ready,” Hazel Ann said yesterday.
She collected the birth certificate for Daniel on Thursday.
“I am so very happy that all this stress is over.
The years of running up and down. I just want to thank Newsday so much and Mr Sandy.
This birth certificate means a lot to him (Daniel),” she said. Daniel will celebrate his 95th birthday on September 26.
