Ramadhar: Independent Liberal Party split COP votes

Tuesday, October 22 2013

IT WAS a very subdued Congress of the People (COP) political leader Prakash Ramadhar who arrived last night at COP Operations Centre in Charlieville, as results of the local general election painted a most grim picture for the party.

While at first it looked like the COP candidates were making some headway in some of the five electoral districts they were contesting, that lead was quickly taken away by the People’s National Movement (PNM).

Saying the COP has always been given the hard and difficult road, alluding to seats that were considered to be PNM strongholds, Ramadhar said the COP has learned to always take the negative and turn it into the positive.

He said it was because of the three way split between the COP, the ILP and the United National Congress (UNC) that the votes went as they did. “Looking at the votes between the COP and the ILP (Independent Liberal Party), if they are tabulated, it would have put the COP on top,” he said.

The COP contested seats in the corporations of Tunapuna/Piarco, Arima, San Fernando, Diego Martin and Port-of-Spain. However, Ramadhar was stoic as he said that the loss of these corporations will not deter the COP.

“We are undeterred by any one election. We are not here for just this election, but we will be here for the next generation,” he asserted.
