THEY'RE BACK: Former Attorney General and Former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday speak at the head table of a meeting Held at the Rienzi Complex Couva, y...

FORMER heads of the United National Congress ( UNC) yesterday bashed the ruling People’s Partnership (PP) Government saying that the current Kamla Persad-Bissessar-led administration is not of the same political party.

“Every time you condemn the UNC, say ‘them UNC’ not we own because that is not the real UNC, it is them UNC. They posing as UNC because they thief the UNC clothes. What you see now is not the real UNC. The real UNC locked up in a room somewhere struggling to get out. You must free UNC from the bondage of its kidnappers,” said UNC’s founder Basdeo Panday yesterday.

The former Prime Minister was delivering the feature address at a mass meeting hosted by the All Trinidad General Workers Trade Union (ATGWTU) in collaboration with the former Cane Farmers and the Sugar Boilers Associations held at Rienzi Complex, Couva.

Panday encouraged the gathering to take back their party saying that in 2010, the 22-year-old party was standing and walking strong, but it was kidnapped, robbed and locked in a room, he added. Panday charged that ex-Caroni (1975 Ltd) workers expected the opposition PNM to be brutal to them. However, he further charged that the workers, not in their wildest imagination thought the “people in government would be ten times worse than their former tormenters”

Among the other persons attending the meeting were former Attorney General Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, ILP interim leader Jack Warner, attorney Mikela Panday and President General (ATGWTU) Nirvan Maharaj.

Panday chastised the ruling Government saying they drafted “so-called” agricultural and resident leases for the former workers. Panday added, “When they came in power, they had a opportunity to revise the entire VSEP programme. Instead, they worsen it. How come you have to pay now? They made it worst. Is it just naked spite or malice or is it just incompetence? They keep it in their back pockets and they wait for election time so that they can fool and mamaguy you. Forgive me, some of you so damn stupid, you fall for it. Don’t you see they are conning you?”

The former Attorney General suggested that rather than distributing leases, the Government should give out deeds of conveyers. In front of the gathering, he tore several leases. He accused the Government of acting inconsistent with the terms of a judge’s order to distribute the lands to the ex-Caroni workers.

“In January, if this Government does not comply what it supposed to do, apart from legal action there will be political action,” Maharaj promised.
