Police lock down Beetham

Thursday, December 12 2013

BEETHAM was yesterday locked down for several hours by heavily armed police officers after reports that armed men pulled out a woman and two men from a maxi-taxi shortly after the vehicle came to a stop at the side of the Priority Bus Route (PBR).

Officers from the Besson Street Police Station yesterday swooped down on the Beetham Gardens as they searched for the men after the abduction. The victims were pulled from a red-band maxi taxi which was proceeding west along the Priority Bus Route in the vicinity of Beetham Gardens. According to reports, shortly after 1.30 pm, the maxi-taxi which at the time contained eight passengers was heading towards Port-of-Spain when one of the passengers pressed the bell for the maxi-taxi to stop near 19th Street in Beetham Gardens.

As the maxi-taxi came to a stop at the side of the bus route, three gunmen entered the maxi taxi and dragged a woman and two men out of the vehicle and along a street in the Beetham Gardens. As the gunmen were marching the three off, the maxi-taxi driver quickly sped off. One of the abducted persons was last night identified as Kendall Thomas of Carenage.

A report was made to the Besson Street Police Station. Officers from the station together with officers from the Inter-Agency Task Force and the Guard and Emergency Branch locked down the area for several hours in search of the gunman and the abducted persons.

A female relative of Thomas who witnessed the abduction was interviewed by police and she provided them with a photo of her brother. Investigators from the CCTV unit were yesterday viewing footage to attempt to identify the gunmen and to get a clear sense of where the missing persons were taken to.

Up to late yesterday, the police search was continuing. Police said they are also in search of the driver who failed to report the matter. The whereabouts of the three persons were not known up to press time and investigations are continuing.
