Beetham residents yesterday apologised to the family of 25-year-old Kendel Thomas who was found dead in the area last Thursday. Thomas’ body was found in a river in the Beetham Gardens one day after he was abducted from a maxi-taxi which had stopped at the side of the Priority Bus Route (PBR) to let off a passenger.

Speaking to Newsday yesterday, 19-year-old Kareem Marcell said the community wanted to extend condolences to Thomas’ family. He said the community wanted to apologise to his family and the country because they have done some wrong and they needed to take ownership as a community.

“We needed to take ownership because when bad is going on, on the other side, we come out as a community and voice our opinion,” he said.

The former student of Trinity College wanted to highlight the fact that the suspects held for Thomas’ murder were under the age of 18.

He said this signalled a crisis among the youth in the community and he called on the different stakeholders and Government agencies to assist. Marcell said there were many issues within the Beetham Gardens including the lack of empowerment and lack of proper infrastructure pointing out the still incomplete community centre.

“We are saying let us find things to do with idle hands in our community before the devil does,” he said.

Marcell said he and others have formed a group in an effort to uplift the community.
