By NEWSDAY REPORTER Wednesday, December 25 2013

JUST OVER a week after a man was shot after exiting the Port-of-Spain Prison, police have arrested a man parked outside the prison, with a gun. On Saturday morning at about 11.30 am, police sources told Newsday, officers of the Port-of-Spain Operations Unit, responding to a tip- off, went to the front of the City Prison on Frederick Street. A search was conducted on several persons outside the jail, but nothing was recovered.

The officers then observed a dark-coloured B15 Nissan with one male occupant inside who was acting suspiciously. They carried out a search and found a .9 mm Firestar pistol with 11 rounds of ammunition. The man was arrested and taken to Belmont Police Station. The operation was spearheaded by Snr Supt Roban.

On December 12, police said, Ravindra Beharry, 28, of Patna Village, Diego Martin was shot moments after walking out of the Port-of-Spain Prison. Beharry was taken to hospital to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds.

Beharry had been arrested for allegedly assaulting his neighbour and as a result, had appeared before a Port-of-Spain magistrate. He was granted bail in the sum of $30,000. The sum was paid and Beharry was released from Remand Prison and was shout outside the prisons. Investigations are continuing.

In an unrelated incident, officers of the Port-of-Spain Operations Unit arrested two men and seized a gun and ammunition. The operation was carried out between the hours of 11 pm Monday and 2 am yesterday under the supervision of Snr Supt Roban and including Supt Kenny McIntyre, ASP Edwards, Sgt Bruno, Cpl Ramdass, Cpl Pooran, PC Yearwood, PC Smith, WPC Addie, PC John Baptiste, WPC Soobhenath, PC Marcano and PC Hernandez.

While conducting Ďstop and searchí exercises in the Belmont district the officers had cause to stop and search a white B14 Nissan at the corner of Norfolk St and St Margaretís Lane, Belmont. Upon searching they seized one revolver with six rounds of .38 special ammunition and arrested two men.

Further enquiries led the officers to a home in Agard Lane, Belmont where a pistol and several rounds of .380 special ammunition and a small quantity of narcotics were further recovered.

The two men were charged and taken to the Belmont Police Station. They will appear in the Port-of-Spain Magistrates Court on Friday.
