After Christmas, Shop!

By Rachael Espinet Friday, December 27 2013

After spending time with their friends and family on Christmas Day, bargain hunters chose to spend yesterday searching for sales as many stores offered an annual Boxing Day sale.

Though the streets of Port-of-Spain were fairly deserted, some stores on Frederick Street who opened their doors on Boxing Day attracted patrons.

Radio Shack and Detour, which are in the same building, both had one day sales for Boxing Day.

Radio Shack offered 50 percent off all toys, five percent off televisions and 15 percent off all other items. The store opened at 9 am yesterday morning, and Sheena Singh, the cashier for the store said they were receiving a lot of sales.

“We are pretty busy. We have had a lot of sales so far, and it is only the morning. We are doing well,” Singh said.

Maria Noel, a chef from Morvant, was shopping in Radio Shack with her children. She said every year she takes advantage of the sales offered.

“I come for the savings, the bargains, I love half price. We don’t want to spend all the money one time, so we buy when there are sales,” Noel said, adding that she came to Radio Shack to get toys for her children because they were at a good price.

“I bought my son a helicopter for Christmas, but that cost around $400. Now the same helicopter cost about $200. I wish I could have bought the toys now,” she said.

Though Noel was happy about the sale at Radio Shack, she said that she was disappointed that other stores were not open.

Detour also had many shoppers taking advantage of the Boxing Day sale. They offered 20 percent off clothes and 10 percent off shoes. All the items in the store were on sale. Customers even got a discount on items that were already discounted for the Christmas Season.

A shopper who just identified himself as “Ryan,” said he came out to shop just because of the sale. While he was not looking for anything in particular, he said he does not do any shopping unless there is a guarantee bargain available for him.

J&K Signature Styles, a clothing store on Frederick Street, also offered a Boxing Day sale. On Christmas Day the clients on their mailing list received either an email or a text message stating that the store was offering a buy two get one off sale for that one day.

Natalie Smith, the store manager, said J&K has offered that sale since the store opened five years ago, and every year they have great sales. She attributes the success of their sales to the store’s regulars who patronise them frequently.

“Our sales are going great. We are having a steady flow of customers. The style of our clothes, our standard and our quality keep our customers coming back. Most of our clients who are here today are regulars,” she said.

One regular customer was Melissa Ramkisoon from Diego Martin. She said when she received the email she knew she had to go to J&K and take part in their sale.

“I got this email that said buy two get one free, so I decided to come out and see what Port-of- Spain has to offer,” Ramkisoon said.

A shopper who identified herself as “Nikesha” said she shops at J&K all the time and knew about the sale, but the text message she received on Christmas Day was a “good reminder.”

“I was planning on coming out on Boxing Day, but the text just reminded me. Right now I am going to try on clothes and I will buy as many as fits,” Nikesha said.
