Trini ‘drowns’ in Venezuela

By CECILY ASSON Monday, December 30 2013

MYSTERY surrounds the “drowning” death of food hut operator Courtland “Bucket” Phillip, 48, of Erin whose body, according to a report, was found floating in Venezuelan waters about two weeks ago.

Up to yesterday, Newsday was told the body had not been handed over to a close female relative who has since journeyed to the Venezuelan mainland to make arrangements to bring the body home for burial.

It is believed Phillip, who along with a relative operated a food place on Erin Beach, may have been robbed of a quantity of cash he had in his possession while on one of his regular trips to Venezuela.

Local police yesterday confirmed they have a report that Phillip had drowned. Newsday was told that a report stated while out at sea in a pirogue, Phillip was engaged in a telephone conversation with a close female relative when during the conversation, he told her to hold on. She however lost contact and when she called back another voice answered the phone telling her that he had drowned. The person explained to her that he had fallen overboard.

One relative told Newsday yesterday that she was very suspicious about the circumstances surrounding Phillip’s death. “I can’t say much but something more happened and we must know the truth on how he died,” the female relative said. “His wife is now over there trying to see if she can get the body to bring it back. We don’t know when that will be,” the relative added.
