$1M reward for info on murder, highway heist

By Nalinee Seelal Wednesday, January 1 2014

A whopping one million dollars is being offered by Crime Stoppers Trinidad and Tobago for information on the daring highway robbery of a Sentinel Security armoured vehicle in which more than $17 million was stolen, and security guard Bert Clarke was shot dead on November 27.

Yesterday marked 34 days since the heist and Crime Stoppers in an advertisement said it was offering the $1 million reward for information on the robbery. Secretary of Crime Stoppers Kyra Ali confirmed to Newsday yesterday that this was the largest reward ever offered by Crime Stoppers since it was established locally in 1999.

She said funding for Crime Stoppers comes from Government and the private sector.

Chairman of Crime Stoppers John Aboud was unavailable for comment yesterday.

A team of investigators has been assigned to probe the robbery and murder.

Newsday understands while the Homicide Bureau of Investigations pursues a lead on the murder of Clarke, officers are yet to come up with a lead on the robbery.

A Beetham man identified by police as a gang leader was detained a few weeks ago in connection with the murder and robbery, but was released due to a lack of evidence.

At about 4.30 am on November 27, a Sentinel Security vehicle travelling east along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, in the vicinity of the Trincity Industrial Estate, was hit by a silver-grey Ford Ranger TCX 7079. The occupants of the Ford Ranger proceeded to open fire on the security vehicle killing Clarke, an Estate superintendent. They then escaped in a white Kia Sorento PCS 9127 with the stolen money.

Anyone with information with robbery and murder can contact 800-TIPS.
