‘Iron Lady’ of journalism

Thursday, January 2 2014

VETERAN journalist and the current communications manager for the Judiciary, Jones P Madeira yesterday praised Newsday Editor-in-Chief and Chief Executive Officer Therese Mills as “the Iron Lady of journalism in Trinidad and Tobago.” Madeira’s comments were contained in a statement issued by the Media Association of TT (MATT) on Mills’ passing yesterday.

A former colleague of Mills at the Trinidad Guardian, Madeira said she epitomised journalism at its best in this country. “She moved from being a journalist to being at the very top of the editorial function,” he said. “She was the “Iron Lady” of journalism in TT, and she was gentle when she had to be gentle and had a very kind character. She never looked a year older despite advancing in age,” Madeira added.

He also said Mills was never prepared to just sit at the desk when she was an administrator.

“She was very aware of accuracy and had a sense of toughness yet she was gentle, very tolerant and maternal. She is going to be missed,” he said.

In its statement, MATT noted Mills, “was the first woman to read and write her way to the top of a national newspaper in TT and the Caribbean, when she became Editor-in-Chief of the Trinidad Guardian in 1989, after joining the paper in 1956 as a junior feature writer; she remained in the top position until her retirement in 1993,” MATT said.

Noting Mills was Editor-in-Chief of the Newsday from its first issue in 1993, MATT also said, “Over her multi-decade career, Mrs Mills reported prolifically on national, regional and international events.

“Since taking up the challenge at Newsday, she was able to guide the paper to its pinnacle, being the most-read paper for eight consecutive surveys.”

“Journalists of the quality, integrity, longevity and selfless contribution to the profession of Therese Mills are to be admired,” MATT stated.
