Archbishop: Reduce anger in TT

By SEAN DOUGLAS Friday, January 3 2014

ROMAN Catholic Archbishop Joseph Harris, last evening lamented there was too much anger in the society, as he appeared on CNC3 television news to comment on the spate of seven murders in the first two days of the New Year.

Still recuperating from recent surgery, His Grace echoed remarks recently made by Acting Commissioner of Police, Stephen Williams, who had said the police are committed to giving their best effort against crime, but something more must be done about this “angry society”.

Harris interpreted Williams’ words to mean that the population must begin to look at how family life is lived in TT. His Grace said families are meant to be “schools of gracious living”, but sadly all too often they are not, but instead are sites of abuse between parents, or between parent and child.

“There is an awful lot of anger in the society,” lamented Harris. “We must find ways to deal with it.” Finding creative ways to reduce anger in the society will cut the rates of murder, child-abuse and road rage, he said.

His Grace quoted the recent words of one Fr Assing who had urged people to do more to share with each other the love of Jesus Christ. Harris elaborated, “Every citizen of the country must be concerned about the plight of the most vulnerable in our midst”. Yet Harris added that citizens must also keep watch for suspicious activity and abusive actions, which should be reported to the police, instead of eyewitnesses staying quiet. “The time has come when we have to get involved, or the problems will continue,” said Harris.
