PRIME Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said she and entire her family continue to pray for her older sister, Sally Ahamad, as she recovers from surgery as the full extent of her illness remains unclear.

Persad-Bissessar made this comment in a statement which was issued by the Office of the Prime Minister shortly after she returned to the country, yesterday. Persad-Bissessar left the country on December 28 to visit Ahamad, after learning that she was hospitalised. The statement said the Prime Minister confirmed Ahamad underwent surgery on January 2 at Sloane Hospital in New York.

“She underwent the surgery for a stomach problem. We still do not know the full extent of her ailment, but we continue to pray for her recovery. When I left her yesterday, she was speaking, although she has been kept at the hospital. It has been a difficult time for all of us, but we continue to have faith in God,” Persad-Bissessar said.

The Prime Minister thanked all persons who have been praying for Ahamad. Persad-Bissessar arrived home yesterday at 6.25 am on-board BW 425. She was greeted by Labour Minister Errol McLeod, who had acted as prime minister in her absence, and other Cabinet ministers.

Persad-Bissessar said she had planned to return home on Friday night but was unable to do so because of the snow storm in New York and the uncertainty over whether JFK International Airport would be open.

The snow storm which delayed Persad-Bissessar’s return home is part of a major winter storm, which according to the BBC News, has already blanketed areas of Canada and the north-eastern US with up to two feet (60 cm) of snow. The storm has been blamed for 16 deaths and the cancellation of over 5,000 flights since last Wednesday.

Persad-Bissessar said she has been updated on all that have happened in TT during her absence.

In her absence, the country has recorded a total of 13 murders for the year.

The statement from the OPM concluded by saying that Persad-Bissessar has several engagements this week.
