EMA serves notice on Petrotrin

Monday, January 6 2014

THE Environmental Management Authority (EMA) has served notice of two violations on Petrotrin resulting in breaches in the Environmental Management Act for the oil spills along the southwest coastline of Trinidad.

In a statement, EMA chairman Dr Allan Bachan said the legislative process will also be initiated and will address the non-compliance of environmental requirements which are crucial.

Bachan indicated the EMA intends to rigorously enforce the laws through appropriate action. He also said the EMA carried out a preliminary aerial and ground assessment of the affected sites on Saturday.

Bachan said the EMA will continue to assess the environmental impact and the measures to be employed in the restoration of affected areas and provide assistance to persons in these areas.

The first spill occurred on December 16 and to date a total of 11 spills have been reported in south Trinidad.

The EMA has indicated that further site visits will take place. At a news conference at the Office of the Prime Minister last Thursday, Petrotrin chairman Lindsay Gillette said the company had “strong evidence” that two of the spills were acts of sabotage but the exact cause of all 11 spills remains unknown.

Petrotrin president Khalid Hassanali said it will cost the State oil company over $8 million to clean up the oil spills. Gillette said Petrotrin hopes to complete cleanup operations by the end of February.
