Rapid Response vehicle in accident

Wednesday, January 22 2014

ONE OF the new Rapid Response Unit (RRU) vehicles was yesterday involved in an accident near Lopinot Junction along the Priority Bus Route. The vehicle collided with a white Nissan Sunny and then crashed into the fence of a nearby house.

The owner of the house, Rudolph Stanford told Newsday he heard crashing sounds at 11 am and when he looked outside, saw that an accident had taken place. He said he called for an ambulance that rushed the driver of the Sunny to the Arima health facility, suffering with a broken arm. He said this was not the first time a vehicle crashed into his home, as a few years ago a Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) bus crashed into his wall.

He said the police told him to visit the Arouca police station so he could be compensated.

The RRU was launched earlier this month where 22 vehicles were deployed as part of the pilot project in the Northern Division, North Eastern Division, and the Western Division. Senior officers yesterday said the accident was minor and the RRU vehicle will be back on the road shortly.

In an unrelated incident, a cyclist died on Monday after a traffic light at Dinsley Junction in Tacarigua fell on him. According to police, at about 12.15 pm, a grey Tuscon Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) was proceeding east along the Priority Bus Route when its driver attempted to turn right, at the Dinsley Junction. While manoeuvering the turn, a black B13 heading west clipped the back of the SUV causing it to spin around. The SUV crashed into a traffic light which in turn fell on Bachoo Basdeo who was riding his bicycle nearby. Basdeo was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex where he died at about 3.40 pm.
