There is something special happening in Morvant.
For the second time this week, the community celebrates the life of a centenarian. Violet Riviere turned 106 yesterday. The mother of nine was feted at her home, 58 Crithlow Hill, Chinapoo Village, Morvant.
The day before, Elizabeth Edwards was the toast of Morvant for her 104th birthday. Edwards lives at Coconut Drive.
In Riviere’s case she was hailed as an outstanding care-giver who always seeks the interest of the children in her community.
Riviere, a seamstress, is originally from St Vincent, where, as a young woman she worked on a plantation. It was there she met her husband Ebenezer Riviere. Eventually they both came to Trinidad in 1956. Ebenezer died in 1997.
When asked yesterday what was her favourite food, Riviere responded, “anything with breadfruit and fish.”
Her granddaughter, Rose Marrie Walters, as well as Tanya Toppin both share the responsibility of taking care of Riviere.
Laventille West MP Nileung Hypolite presented Riviere with a purple and white birthday cake.
Although Riviere no longer walks, she is not on any special diet, does not suffer from any illness, and is not on any medication.
Walters said in celebration of her grandmother’s long life of good health, family members are having a thanksgiving on Sunday for the children in the community.
