PNM internal election on May 18

By COREY CONNELLY Sunday, January 26 2014

The People’s National Movement’s (PNMs) internal election will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2014.

In making the announcement yesterday, the party’s chairman, Franklin Khan, said the date of the poll will be subject to final approval at a specially-convened meeting of the general council on Wednesday.

Speaking at the post-general council news conference at Balisier House in Port-of-Spain, Khan said the internal election will be the first to be conducted under the one-man-one-vote system which was introduced by PNM political leader Dr Keith Rowley following a major change to the party’s Constitution in December 2012.

Previously, appointments were made through a delegate system. Some 17 executive positions, including that of political leader, are up for grabs in the election.

“It will take some effort because this is something new to the PNM,” Khan said of the one-man-one-vote system.

During Wednesday’s special general council meeting, Khan said, the rules and code of conduct for candidates will also be revealed. He said former Attorney General Bridgid Annisette-George was put in charge of the rules and regulations committee for the election.
