N’Janela wins Pioneers crown

By Marlene Augustine Wednesday, February 19 2014

Singing from the tender age of four and inspired by her mother, N’Janela Duncan-Regis drew on her years of experience to take first place in the National Action Youth Committee (NYAC) Pioneers calypso competition, held at Jean Pierre Complex, Port-of-Spain, last Thursday.

The ten-year-old student from Eshe’s Learning Centre, performed her 2014 song “I am Trinbago,” composed by Gregory Ballantyne, to give her a winning start for the Carnival season.

The song reflects on the love and appreciation for her country, although the country faces criminal elements on a daily basis.

She said the song keeps playing in her head and she loves singing the chorus of the song, “I am Trinbago. Ah can’t run from the fact. I love this great land of the free. I am Trinbago, Trinbago is me.”

She said she loves and enjoys listening to Sandra Des Vignes Millington (Singing Sandra) songs. Duncan-Regis claims she has been working hard to promote positivity towards her school, and herself, through the art form of calypso.

“I will love to be named the next National Junior Calypso Monarch,” Regis said.

She is also the youngest member of the Nation Jump-Rope Federation, and will soon attend the World Championship game in Florida and Hong Kong this year. Regis will also perform in the National Junior Chutney Soca Monarch; National School Soca Monarch, and the National Junior Calypso Monarch finals, with her two songs — “I am Trinbago” and “Real Unity.”

Rachel Alleyne-Noreiga of Sacred Heart Girls’ RC School placed second with “It eh Safe Again,” composed by Garfield Felix. She is also a member of the Invaders Youth band, the juniors of the Caribbean Airlines Invaders Steel Orchestra . Third place went to Stefan Camejo of Sacred Heart Boys’ RC School with his rendition of “Boy on A Mission.”

After graduating from the Pioneers to the Jewels category, Aaron Duncan of Trinity Junior Private School, placed first with his song “The Reward of Discipline”. Sharissa Camejo of Holy Name Convent with “Calypso Appreciation” placed second, and Mitchila Williams of Scarborough Methodist finished third with “I Still Love It”.
