Trini vibes wows US celebs

By Dacel Choy Thursday, February 27 2014

American celebrities who are brought down every year for the International Soca Monarch competition give the country and its music visibility in markets outside of the usual diaspora. Wendy Fitzwilliam, public relations consultant for the Caribbean Prestige Foundation (CPF) made this statement yesterday while addressing a press conference at the Hyatt Regency, Port-of- Spain to introduce this year’s celebrity commentary panel, television and movie stars Boris Kodjoe, his wife, Nicole Ari Parker and Damien Dante Wayans. Actor Anthony Anderson and reality star Tahiry Jose, will also be on the panel.

Fitzwilliam said tomorrow’s competition will be broadcast through Pay-Per-View to roughly 140 million households in North America.

“What they (the celebrities) do is bring an at home audience that we won’t otherwise be able to attract soca music which is loved where it is well known,” she said. This is Kodjoe and Parker’s first visit to the country and Wayans’ second. Kodjoe and Parker said they were looking forward to being a part of everything. Kodjoe who acts in BET’s comedy parody the Real Husbands of Hollywood, said the producers have wanted to spend one or two episodes overseas. He assured that when he returns home, he will have that conversation with them again as he would love to return to Trinidad to shoot an episode. Wayans visited last year and said he fully immersed himself in the culture which was why he had to return this year. Parker, who starred in the Showtime series Soul Food with her husband, said Wayans told them that everybody on the island was really warm and he also told them to pace themselves for Carnival.

Asked if they were familiar with soca music, Kodjoe said actress Gabrielle Union, who visited here several years ago, and her fiancee, basketball player Dwyane Wade took him and his wife to a soca concert in Miami and they enjoyed it. The celebrity couple will be in the country until Saturday while Wayans will stay and play mas with YUMA.
