Tobago jumps up

By KARL E CUPIDTobago Bureau Wednesday, March 5 2014

ONLY five bands had hit the downtown Scarborough thoroughfare “triangle” (CarringtonStreet/Wilson Road/Gardenside Street) by 4 pm on Carnival Tuesday, but this did not stop hundreds of persons from having fun during the reign of the Merry Monarch.

In fact, Happy Lost Sailors — Return to Dakota, led by Robert Marshall, was the first band in town at 1.35 pm.

It would take two hours before the entertainment-starved crowd could see another band, when Butterfly Utopia, a colourful presentation of Lindley and Associates, flitted by.

This precipitated a flurry of bands within a twenty-minute period, including The United Kingdom of Great Britain, a presentation of Lue-Ann and Associates, and The King’s Court, a production of Skandalus, led by Nelsia Ashby and Lindy Davidson.

Then there was a lull, before Wings of Life, a presentation of the Riley’s Connection, came in sight just about 4 pm.

Up to about 1 pm, apart from the proliferation of vendors’ booths and straggling spectators scattered here and there at strategic “cool spots” to avoid the sweltering heat, the only thing resembling mas and reminding one that it was Carnival Tuesday in Scarborough, were individuals and groups of costumed masqueraders.
