For the seventh consecutive year, veteran San Fernando bandleader, Ivan Kalicharan, successfully held off all challengers to take the southern city’s Band of the Year crown.
The victory also marked an astounding 21 times by Kalicharan whose 2014 presentation, ‘Beats’ also copped both the King and Queen of the Band 2014.
The results were announced by San Fernando Mayor, Kazim Hosein and Convenor of the San Fernando Carnival Committee, Alderman Junia Regrello at the San Fernando City Council chambers, Harris Promenade, San Fernando yesterday. Also at the head table was SFCC chief executive officer, Indarjit Singh and councillor Phillip Montano.
First runner up was Fireworks Promotions presentation of “Mysteries Beneath” while 2nd place runner up was awarded to Lionel Jagessar & Associates with their presentation of “Smoke Signal.”
An elated Ivan Kalicharan, when asked reporters whether he was confident of winning said: “when you go into any race, expect to win.”
However, he said bandleaders should also benefit from government’s generosity which was exhibited to calypsonians and steel bandsmen saying bandleaders mas camps still consisted of an open space blocked off by galvanize sheeting.
“I feel as the government giving calypsonians and steelband man, they should assist the band leaders because there are bandleaders in San Fernando still block round with two sheets of galvanise and cardboard building they mas camp, Kalicharan said, and when asked about the type of assistance, he added: Warehousing, because I need a warehouse right now.”
Asked whether he was satisfied with the prize monies, Kalicharan said: “not at all, no hundred thousand dollars could pay for the hard work that go into Carnival and after that $100,000, the government taking 25 percent of that in tax and you end up with seventy five and when you share up that amount, with the workers, you have nothing to get, nothing, you end up losing.” Meanwhile, Hosein promised that problems such as the route would be addressed in next year’s Carnival celebrations saying the Rienzi Kirton highway would be transformed into the hub for all Carnival activities as it possessed all of the ingredients for both the spectators, judges and masqueraders. Hosein also promised that prize monies would be distributed by the end of March and noted that by Carnival 2016, the SFCC would be encouraging all media networks around the world to pay for the live coverage of the 2016 celebrations.
