‘Daddy raped me’

By NALINEE SEELAL Wednesday, March 19 2014

A 38-YEAR-OLD father of four and his 31-year-old wife were detained by Caroni police yesterday following a report lodged with the police that the man had raped his eight-year-old daughter twice late last year.

According to reports, the girl who was placed in a safe house along with her siblings, aged five, three and a four-month-old baby, reported to adult supervisors at the safe house last Friday that her father had raped her twice last year.

Officials at the safe house immediately contacted police and a party of officers led by Sgt Waithe and including Cpl Curtis Pierre and WPC Robinson visited the safe house and took the child to a doctor in Chaguanas who after medically examining her, confirmed to police that the child was sexually active.

The child was then taken to the Caroni Police Station where she gave officers a detailed statement outlining the sexual assault. Yesterday, a party of officers led by detective Cpl Pierre went to a house in Caroni where the rape victim’s father and mother were arrested.

The couple who were charged in late December for wilful neglect of their four children, gave statements to officers, Newsday was told. According to police sources, the mother of the child claimed, she witnessed when her husband (the victim’s own father) raped the child. She added that she did not do anything to stop her husband and did not report the assault to anyone.

Late yesterday police investigators sought advice on what charges could be laid, and the father of the eight-year-old girl is expected to be charged with incest, while his wife is to be charged with failing to report a crime to police. The couple are expected to appear before a Chaguanas magistrate today.
