RECAPTURED: David John Pierre, serving a lifetime sentence for murder, was recaptured yesterday after spending nine months on the run following his es...

A CONVICTED killer serving a life sentence, who escaped from the Carrera Island Prison nine months ago was recaptured yesterday by officers from Southern Division Task Force and the St Margaret’s Police Station during a joint exercise in Marabella.

Prisoner David John Pierre reportedly removed an iron grill from his cell on June 23 and swam two miles from the island prison to the mainland. Police believe Pierre had someone on the outside waiting to transport him to his hideout.

According to police, at about 3 pm yesterday, officers led by ASP Zamsheed Mohammed and including Cpl Nanan, PC Kurt Persad and others carried out an anti-crime exercise in the Marabella area.

The exercise was initiated after weeks of intense surveillance and intelligence gathering.

Acting on information, officers went to New City Avenue where they spotted 33-year-old Pierre walking along the roadway.

On seeing the officers, Pierre attempted to run away, but was nabbed and taken into custody.

Police sources claimed Pierre on being arrested, started to sob telling officers he did not commit any murder and that he prefers to die rather than return to Carrera.

He was taken to the San Fernando Police Station where he was expected to be interviewed and then charged with escaping legal custody.

Newsday understands the prisoner is expected to be handed over to Prisons authorities following his court appearance.

Prisons sources told Newsday Pierre is now being considered a high-risk prisoner because of his escape and as such consideration may be given to have him kept at Maximum Security Prison in Golden Grove, Arouca.

Pierre was found guilty of killing Sangre Grande taxi driver Chanker Mootilal, 52, in October 2002 and was sentenced to death by Justice Melville Baird.

In 2003, Pierre’s death sentence was vacated by the Court of Appeal and commuted to life in prison.

Since his escape, Pierre was spotted once in the Maracas area.
