Clamp down on noisy bars in south

By CECILY ASSON Sunday, April 6 2014

A LARGE speaker-box outside of a popular liming spot in Marabella was seized by members of the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) police unit on Friday night when they joined forces with officers of the San Fernando City Corporation (SFCC) in a clamping down on noisy bars in the southern city. The owner of ‘Club Martinique’, of Union Road, Marabella, will have to attend the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court to retrieve the speaker box.

EMA officers said yesterday that the establishment was playing music 80.3 decibels above the prescribed limit. Charges are to be laid by summons. Club Martinique was one of seven bars shut down Friday night during the police exercise which was led by Cpl Forde and PCs Morris, Haricharan and Lewis of the EMA, and PCs Jaikaran, Francis and Singh of SFCC.

Other bars which felt the wrath of the police exercise on Friday night, leading into yesterday morning, were “Club Oxygen” and “Odyssey” of Marabella; “G Spot” of Cipero Street, San Fernando; “Machismo” on Coffee Street, San Fernando; Charlie’s of Pointe-a-Pierre Road, San Fernando and Sherry’s Bar in San Fernando.

In commending the police officers, San Fernando Mayor Kazim Hosein told Sunday Newsday that the exercise against noise pollution was an ongoing one in the city, Hosein said.

“There are laws and the decision was taken by the corporation to enforce all the laws, and so we are urging everyone to stay within the law and avoid embarrassment.”
