Islamic Guild focuses on detained Imams

By SEAN DOUGLAS Monday, April 7 2014

A MEETING held over the weekend by the Islamic Missionary Guild (IMG) on the plight of several Trini Muslims detained in Caracas, Venezuela on alleged terrorism crimes, has decided to first focus efforts on helping three Imams who are incarcerated, while Government helps the five other detainees.

IMG president Imtiaz Mohammed told Newsday he hosted about 20 Islamic leaders at his group’s Kelly Village headquarters, to give an update on the situation and seek suggestions as to the way forward.

“The legal advice from the Imams’ lawyers is to try to detach them from the rest of the group,” Mohammed said. Mohammed said the Imams and their purpose in Caracas (to seek Saudi Arabian visas) were very well known to the Trinidad and Tobago authorities. He said that last Friday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Dookeran, stated he is helping the other detainees.

Mohammed said the 20 Islamic leaders expressed support during the meeting on the weekend, for the line being taken by the IMG in seeking to pursue the matter via diplomatic means and by seeking the best legal counsel for the Imams.

He said some Muslim leaders had said the matter is very delicate and must be handled more tightly and the meeting had therefore agreed that the only two spokespersons for the Imams as authorised by their families are himself and Nafeesa Mohammed (former head of the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation).
