People’s National Movement (PNM) political leader Dr Keith Rowley will today present his slate of candidates for the party’s upcoming internal elections at a rally at the Clifton Hill Beach Facility in Point Fortin.

PNM general secretary Ashton Ford said yesterday the rally, scheduled to begin at 3 pm, was not the party’s annual Family Day extravaganza but one that was specially organised by the Rowley camp, ahead of the May 18 poll.

“I want the people to know that this is not the usual family day. This is a Rowley event,” Ford said in a telephone interview.

Rowley is being challenged for the leadership by the party’s incumbent lady vice-chairman and former senator Pennelope Beckles-Robinson.

The highlight of today’s event, Ford said, will be the political leader’s address at about 5 pm. PNM Chairman Franklin Khan, Point Fortin MP Paula Gopee-Scoon and Point Fortin Mayor Clyde Paul are also expected to address the rally.

Ford, who is again contesting the post of general secretary on the Rowley slate, said the campaign was progressing well. He said the party’s recent women’s and youth forums were major successes.

“We have been holding strategic meetings all over the country in preparation for the election,” he said. Ford said the PNM’s former leader, San Fernando East MP Patrick Manning is yet to give a clear endorsement of the person he is supporting in the upcoming elections.

“I cannot say if or when he (Manning) will do so,” he said.

Entertainment will be provided by National Humour Calypso Monarch Myron B (Myron Bruce), Cro Cro (Weston Rawlins) and Tallish (Francis Adams), among other acts.
