Quite a handful: Minister in the Ministry of the People and Social Development Vernella Alleyne-Toppin presents a hamper to Chantal Grant and Arif Ali...

A family of eight who lost their Congo Trace, Barrackpore home in a fire recently, the mother of the nation’s first triplets for 2014 and the mother of the nation’s first twins for 2014 were yesterday given hampers and vouchers from the Ministry of the People and Social Development.

Riad Marcano, speaking on behalf of his family, said since the fire, they have gotten help from all over and they were very grateful. He said persons from Self-Help Commission have even started rebuilding their home. He thanked Public Utilities Minister Nizam Baksh and Gender, Youth and Child Development Minister Clifton De Coteau who aided his family in getting temporary lodging. The family received a voucher to help purchase furniture and they also got a voucher to purchase school books.

Shantal Grant was the mother of the nation’s first triplets this year, Arti Nagessar was the mother of the nation’s first twins. Minister in the Ministry of the People and Social Development, Vernella Toppin told Grant and Nagessar they received a blessing with their children and added that if she could have triplets, she would have them now.

The triplets were born on February 26 last, at the San Fernando General Hospital, and was the first pregnancy for Chantal Grant. Nagessar, had a boy and girl, fraternal twins on New Year’s Day.

Toppin advised the mothers to breastfeed their children, as breastfed babies were the best and brightest.

Speaking to the Ramdass family, Alleyne-Toppin said she was sorry that they lost their home but to keep in mind when life throws one a lemon, one should make lemonade.

“We are very sorry that you had a fire, it is a very difficult thing to deal with, we in the ministry have councillors, whenever there is a fire, we bring our counsellors to you because I imagine it is something you would never forget...when you come back you come back better than before,” she said.
