Msgr Pereira: Country suffering from ‘pale gas’

By LAUREL V WILLIAMS Saturday, April 19 2014

ALTHOUGH this country has been abundantly blessed with natural resources, society continues to deteriorate because of “pale gas” which its people continue to produce, Monseigneur Christian Pereira said yesterday.

Pereira said the term pale gas is an acronym to represent capital vices (or sins) of the human family namely pride, avarice, lust, envy, gluttony ( greed) , anger and sloth. Addressing hundreds of Roman Catholics yesterday at the annual Good Friday procession at San Fernando Hill, Msgr Pereira said the oil and gas that comes from under the ground and out in the sea, have been a blessing and a curse to the nation.

He charged that the resources are not always managed properly as evident from the recent and ongoing disaster in La Brea and surrounding areas. “We have not always managed the profits of the oil and gas properly as evident by the state of our health, education and housing realities, to name a few.

“However my real concern is not about gas but something far more potent. I have come to realise that in spite of the fact that we have been so abundantly blessed, our society continues to deteriorate because of the PALE GAS we continue to produce,” Pereira said.

Pereira who is the parish priest of the Pro-Cathedral of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) RC Church on Harris Promenade, San Fernando, recalled that Pope Gregory the Great, first listed the capital sins as pride, avarice, lust, envy, gluttony, anger and sloth. Pereira added, “Sin is a subtle evil which easily permeates human life and as we allow it to fester we become corrupt, manifesting our sinful or corrupted state in our lack of care, in our comfort with wrong-doing and our willingness to receive the mercy and forgiveness of God.”

As early as 5 am yesterday people began to gather at the base of the historical site to make the trek to the top of the hill, led by Pereira.
