Gary Griffith National Security Minister ...
NATIONAL Security Minister Gary Griffith yesterday said his Ministry together with Crime Stoppers, “have pledged $1 million for information leading to the arrest and successful conviction” of persons involved in the assassination of prominent attorney Dana Seetahal SC. Seetahal was murdered in the early hours of yesterday morning in Woodbrook. In a statement issued by his ministry, Griffith said the $1 million reward is being offered as part of a strategy to ensure, “the perpetrators are brought to justice in the quickest possible time.”
Saying Government has pledged every resource necessary to the law enforcement machinery of the State and that solving Seetahal’s murder has been given “highest priority”, Griffith declared: “We will not rest until those who have committed this most unspeakable act are brought to justice. It is critical that the perpetrators of this crime be brought to justice in the quickest possible time.”
Griffith also said he has been in contact with Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams “to be kept abreast on every stage of the investigation surrounding her (Seetahal’s) death.” Describing Seetahal’s death as “what so far appears to be a well orchestrated hit”, the ministry’s statement said: “ SC Dana Seetahal was murdered at about 12.30 am, while driving through Woodbrook.”
“I have asked the Commissioner of Police to bring these killers to justice and that he should use all resources available to him in investigating this matter. Ms Seetahal was one of the brightest legal minds in the region and this tragedy is an immeasurable loss to the profession, this country and the region as a whole,” Griffith said.
The statement continued, “At around 12.10 am, police officers responding to a report of loud explosions at Hamilton Holder Street, in the vicinity of the Woodbrook Youth Facility, on arrival observed the lifeless body of a female sitting in the driver seat of motor vehicle PCN 6.”
The vehicle’s engine was still idling and the deceased had what appeared to be gunshot injuries to the head and body, the statement concluded. Griffith also said the country and the region have lost one of their brightest minds.
In a statement, the United National Congress (UNC) expressed its condolences to Seetahal’s family and expressed shock at her murder. The party, whose political leader is Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, said, “We have every confidence that the Police Service would investigate this murder and find and prosecute her killers to the full extent of the law.” The UNC said Seetahal’s murder is “a reminder of the dangers lurking in our society that threaten every citizen.”
