FOUR police officers working at the Valencia Police Post had to be taken to the Sangre Grande Hospital for treatment after being beaten by an angry mob which rushed into the police post off the Eastern Main Road yesterday following two stabbing incidents at a nearby bar.
Two police officers who are both on suspension and a man and his daughter were among several persons later arrested.
Police reported that at about 4.30 am they received a call about two stabbings along the Eastern Main Road in Valencia near a bar. Officers later took the two victims to Sangre Grande District Hospital where they are warded in critical but stable condition.
One of the stabbing victims, a man, received multiple stab wounds to his back while the other victim, a female, was stabbed about her face and neck.
Later, about 25 angry persons including the two suspended officers went to the police post and began to curse the officers on duty. Some persons in the mob began to push the officers. Officers quickly radioed for back up as the mob filled the charge room and stood at the entrance of the police post.
During the brawl, four police officers received injuries and had their uniforms torn. They were taken to the Sangre Grande District Hospital where they received treatment and were discharged yesterday evening after spending a few hours for observation for injuries to their head and abdomen.
Cpl Persad of Northern Division Task Force backed up by Eastern Task Force rushed to Valencia Police Post where they quelled the battle and arrested several persons. Sgt Keith “Castro” Leon is continuing inquiries.
Police sources said the detained persons could be charged for assault and malicious damage to Government property. If charged last night, the detained persons could appear in the Sangre Grande Magistrates’ Court today to answer the charges.
