Mother’s Day is here again.

And shoppers, in a bid to cash in on some last-minute purchases, yesterday took to the streets of Port-of-Spain to get that ideal gift.

Unlike years gone by, clothes appear to be the big seller for the occasion, at least in the capital city.

“I sold seven dresses for today alone,” says Debra, a store attendant at Safari Sunset, a ladies apparel store at Town Centre Mall.

“People just seem to want to give their Moms dresses for any occasion, including church.”

Debra said she also sold an assortment of tops and some jewelry at the store, which also caters to full-figured women.

This year, Debra has opted to give her mother jewelry, a pair of stylish gold earrings.

Stores in Aboutique Mall and Excellent City Centre told a similar story.

“Strapless, flowing dresses appear to be the go,” one store clerk told Sunday Newsday, adding that the trend is popular among persons from all age groups.

Many customers, though, stuck to jewelry in its various manifestations: pendants, birthstones, rings and even anklets for those trendy Moms.

Handbags, fragrances, cremes, make-up and gift baskets were also popular choices.

This year, shoppers said they moved away from household appliances and merchandise to more personalised gifts.

In fact, David Simpson, in a novel gesture, said he will be giving his mother a spa treatment.

“That will definitely blow her mind,” he said with a laugh.
