Nelson Street protest

Saturday, May 17 2014

DEBRIS was burnt last night along George Street in Port-of-Spain as residents vented their anger following reports that two persons one of whom is a woman, were shot earlier in the evening by police.

Newsday was told that an Arima man remains warded at hospital in critical condition after being shot several times at nearby Nelson Street in Port-of-Spain. According to police, residents of the area heard several loud explosions at about 1 am and on checking, they saw the man, later identified as former Police Constable Marlon King, lying in a pool of blood.

The police were called and King, 31, was found on the road bleeding from gunshot injuries to his upper torso. He was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital and was warded at the Intensive Care Unit. Investigations are continuing. Residents later reported that yesterday evening, officers opened fire and shot a man and a woman in their arms and hands along George Street. Residents later threw a derelict fridge and tyres onto George Street and set it on fire.

Up to press time, officers were at George Street maintaining the peace while firemen doused the flames. There was a tense air along George Street as rumours swirled that further fiery protests were being planned for later in the night.

The shooting, by police, of the two persons on George Street is the second incident over the past week involving police officers and members of the public.

On Tuesday last, Bagatelle resident Nigel Long was shot four times and killed by police during an alleged shootout between Long and the officers.
