Sex exposé sparks regional debate

Wednesday, May 21 2014

The weekend exposé by the National Parent Teachers Association (NPTA) of eight pregnant schoolgirls at a secondary school in south Trinidad has sparked debate not only at home, but across the region.

NPTA president Zena Ramatali told Newsday yesterday she was contacted by a radio station in Jamaica and is expected to give a live interview via telephone later today.

She told Newsday, “I can’t even recall the name of the radio station that called me because I was taken by surprise. The reporter told me that an article on the schoolgirls appeared in the Gleaner yesterday (Monday) and they wanted to interview me live on radio.”

On Monday the Gleaner carried a report “Eight Trinidadian girls pregnant on school’s football team, Government launches probe” in their newspaper. Stabroek News of Guyana also carried a similar headline in their edition yesterday.

Ramatali said the NPTA has received support from various stakeholders in education for putting the spotlight on the issue of teenage pregnancy in schools.

“We are yet however to get an invitation from the Minister of Education Dr Tim Gopeesingh or any of his technocrats to discuss having sex education as part of the secondary school curriculum, ” Ramatali said.

According to Ramatali, Jamaica’s education system is grappling with similar problems, including schoolgirls being sexually molested by male teachers.
