Roberts ducks reporters

Saturday, May 24 2014

SPORT Minister Anil Roberts yesterday ducked the media at the start of the sitting of the House of Representatives.

Media asked Roberts to address them, but he dodged requests. Speaking from his seat in the chamber before the start of the sitting, he cried out, “The Speaker looking for me too!”

Roberts was however his usual animated self during the day’s debate, on a private motion on the state of crime brought by the PNM’s Colm Imbert.

During the debate PNM St Joseph MP Terrance Deyalsingh twice, unsuccessfully, sought to raise the issue of an undated video apparently showing a bald man resembling a government minister rolling cigarettes and speaking of being a, “two pull man.”

Deyalsingh first stated the Government had a “direct involvement in crime”, leading to protests of imputing improper motives. Speaker Wade Mark upheld objections.

“I apologise and withdraw the remark,” Deyalsingh said before going on to state taxpayer’s money was funding crime, referring to reports of the involvement of groups in make-work programmes. However, Deyalsingh later said Government was a “two pull” Government, leading to further objections. He also withdrew that remark. He stated the criminal justice system is “rudderless”. Roberts was not seen in the chamber at the Parliament tea-break.
