Farmer latest road fatality

By LAUREL V WILLIAMS Sunday, June 1 2014

ABOUT a minute after a mother wished her adult son a safe journey as he made his way home on Friday, she received news that he succumbed to injuries in a vehicular accident. The dead man has been identified as father of one, Sarran Lutchman, 32, of Naparima/ Mayaro Road, North Trace in New Grant.

Lutchman, a farmer, died instantly when his Mazda pickup he was driving crashed into a lamp pole along the said road, situated a few houses away from his home. His mother Sheila Lutchman, 64, recalled that about a minute before she received the tragic news, Lutchman had stopped by her home as customary.

“I told him to take care and telephoned his wife ( Sandra) to let her know that he was on his way home. Normally when Sarran reaches home, he would telephone her to let us know. About a minute after he left here yesterday (Friday) his wife called to say he was in an accident,” Sheila said.

A police report stated that shortly before 7 pm on Friday, the pickup crashed into the pole killing Lutchman instantly. The other occupant of the pickup, Davinand “Bin” Maharaj, 47, sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to hospital. Up to last evening Maharaj, also of North Trace remained warded at the San Fernando General Hospital. An autopsy performed on Lutchman yesterday at the mortuary of the San Fernando General Hospital confirmed that his death was as a result of injuries consistent with a vehicular accident.

Funeral arrangements are being scheduled for Tuesday. Cpl Ramoo of the Tableland Police Station is continuing investigations.
