Shot child out of ICU

Monday, June 2 2014

SARAH HARRY, the four-year-old girl who was shot in the forehead by a stray bullet, is out of the Intensive Care Unit and is breathing on her own, said relieved parents Alisha Henry and Wilton Julian.

Newsday spoke with the family yesterday as they described the child’s recovery. “She is coming along well by God’s grace. She is breathing on her own and is looking better than when she was first brought in. She has lost sight in one of her eyes because of where the bullet passed. I must really thank the doctors who have been taking care of her...they are trying really hard and she is progressing,” Henry said.

Henry told Newsday that the bullet is still lodged in her daughter’s neck. Doctors are against attempting to remove the bullet from Sarah’s neck saying such surgery could put the child in danger.

Henry and her mother (Sarah’s grandmother) have been taking turns sleeping at the children’s ward of the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) where Sarah is warded to ensure she (Sarah) has a relative at her side always.

“It was really hard watching a child go through that kind of pain. But she is getting better every day,” Henry said.

On May 21, Sarah and her mother were in a private-hire car which was proceeding along L’anse Mitan in Carenage on their way home when shots were fired at another car also driving along that road. A stray bullet struck Sarah in her forehead. Up to press time, no arrest has been made. Investigations are continuing.
